The Yoga Sutras has become the canonical text of yoga practitioners in the West over the last half century, but only a tiny fraction of brahmana males would have had access to this text in traditional India. In fact, Yoga philosophy has traditionally been transmitted across the generations through the great pan-Indian stories of exemplary yogi practitioners. This workshop will exemplify this through the story of Queen Kunti, focusing on the teachings of yoga imparted to her by her son, Kapila, considered to be the founder of Yoga. In this way, students will gain a sense of how yoga philosophy is and has been transmitted in real life, on the ground Hinduism, rather than in its exported form to the West.

Edwin Bryant received his Ph.D in Indic languages and Cultures from Columbia University. He taught Hinduism at Harvard University for three years, and is presently the professor of Hinduism at Rutgers University where he teaches courses on Hindu philosophy and religion. He has received numerous awards and fellowships, published eight books and authored a number of articles on Vedic history, yoga, and the Krishna tradition.
