Ashtanga Yoga

What is Ashtanga Yoga?

Ashtanga is a form of yoga developed by K. Pattabhi Jois. It is derived from an ancient Indian practice and philosophy involving a set series of postures calle asanas. This practice is designed to build physical and mental strength, flexibility, and stamina.

Structure and Method

The practice is structured into six different series, each performed in a specific order, combining:

  • Physical Postures (Asanas)
  • Ujjayi Breathing (breathing with sound)
  • Drishti (a set gazing point)
  • Bandhas (internal engagements)

These elements form the Tristana method, creating a meditative flow throughout the practice.

Modifications for Beginners

Despite its reputation for being intense and demanding, the practice can be modified to suit Ashtanga yoga beginners.

Incorporating modifications into the Ashtanga yoga practice allows beginners to build strength, flexibility, and confidence at their own pace. Using props like blocks, straps, bolsters, and chairs helps adjust poses to individual needs, ensuring safe progression and preventing injury. These prop-supported modifications make Ashtanga yoga accessible and beneficial for all experience levels.
