Monica Arellano

Monica Arellano is a Level 2 Authorized teacher in the Ashtanga Yoga Method, a formal blessing received by her teacher, R. Sharath Jois, in Mysore, India. She completed a 2-year apprenticeship program under Tim Feldmann at the Miami Life Center. Monica’s teachings are informed by the knowledge carried on from her teachers and the first-hand experience from her daily asana and meditation practice. Her classes emphasize the breath, alignment, and methods of concentration in hopes of exploring the deeper experience of asana. She believes we can deconstruct unhealthy patterns, facilitate healing on many levels, and find our way back to the most honest version of ourselves through the practice.

Joseph Armstrong

Joseph Armstrong teaches yoga rooted firmly in tradition but with an eye to the future. He underwent a 2-year apprenticeship program at the world-renowned Miami Life Center, continuing his education under his dear teachers, Tim Fieldman and Kino MacGregor. He has studied in Mysore under Sharath Jois. Joseph says that he teaches yoga because attempts to do any and everything else ended disastrously, but when he finally devoted himself to his passion, he became an asset to himself and others. He hopes his practice allows him to be ever more loving and to exist gently.

  • The Ritual of Practice: A Conversation with Monica and Joseph

    Join Joseph and Monica for a community talk on the ritual of practice. Consider what your practice looks like day-to-day as well as through a wider lens - over several years. Where is the structure of the Ashtanga Yoga method helpful and where can it get in the way? What qualities should always be there to maintain the intention and heart of this practice? Join in on the conversation, listen to what different practitioners have to say about this, share your thoughts and bring any questions you might have.

  • Intro to Second Series with Monica

    In this practice class we will go step by step through the first half of Ashtanga Yoga’s Intermediate (or second) series. The intelligent sequencing of the second series allows us to move deeper into backbends in a progressive way to tap into the more subtle work of the nervous system in yoga. Conventionally, intermediate series is introduced once a student has practiced primary series for at least a couple of years, but since Monica will offer variations and modifications, this class is open to all levels. Many of the backbends practiced in intermediate series can be very healing and effective for deepening backbends for any level practitioner.

  • Yoga, the Nervous System, and the Gunas with Joseph

    Inspire and fuel your practice in this in-depth workshop. You’ll learn how to apply guided imagery, meditation, vocal techniques, and breathwork to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and modify the state of your mind and body. Learn the secrets of the Samkhya Philosophy and how it applies to the nervous system, giving you insight and a clear framework for positive change in your life. Deepen your understanding of the Vagus nerve and how it regulates and relaxes the major systems of the body. Learn how to use your new knowledge to tap into your innate flow states and relaxation response. In this workshop, you’ll explore traditional yogic texts and modern science to gain techniques to bring you increased presence, as well as psychological and physical well-being.
