David Swenson has spent countless hours teaching Ashtanga yoga to students around the world. During this workshop, he’ll take you on a deep dive into your hopes and dreams for your Ashtanga practice and show you how to make those dreams a reality. David has practiced Ashtanga since 1973 and has a wealth of knowledge to share about the practice. You don’t want to miss your chance to learn from this master teacher.

David Swenson

David began his yoga journey in 1969, practicing with his brother in a small park at the end of their street in Houston, Texas. There were few sources for yoga at that time, so they practiced from whatever books they could find. David discovered Ashtanga after he met David Williams and Nancy Gilgoff in Encinitas, CA in the early seventies. In 1975, David had the honor of meeting K. Pattabhi Jois during a trip Jois made to the United States. He immediately knew he needed to study with the master. David is one of only a handful of Westerners to have learned the full Ashtanga system including all of the asana sequences and pranayama as originally taught by K. Pattabhi Jois. Today David is recognized as one of the world's foremost practitioners and instructors of Ashtanga. He tirelessly travels year round to teach and offer workshops. His courses are presented in a supportive and compassionate fashion, making it accessible to all levels of practitioners to participate.

Module One:

  • Compassionately Led Primary

The workshop begins with a fully guided tour through the traditional flow of the Primary Series. As always there will be alternatives offered and compassionate attention provided so that all levels will feel comfortable to participate within their particular levels.

  • Inversions, Backbends And Sitting With Your Breath

Finding Stability When the World is Inverted and Returning Home to Breath. This class will turn your world upside/down in order to explore the dynamics of inverting the body through building a solid foundation from which to grow while also looking at the opposing forces at play in Inversions. Backbends will be redefined as front openings and sitting quietly will be explored as an active participation in self- exploration through developing a relationship with our lifelong companion, breath.

  • Eight Limbs And Daily Life

How does this practice apply within the context of daily living? Underlying the mysterious and complex philosophy of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras there is a truly profound simplicity that may be applied within the context of our daily lives. This class will discuss the Eight Limbs of Ashtanga Yoga and explore their applications within our day-to-day life. What is the use of Philosophy without real application? We may memorize quotations or stanzas from great writings but unless we can apply them within our life they are merely words spoken rather than knowledge realized.

Module Two:

  • Intermediate Series for FUN!

The day begins with a compassionate and measured flow of the Intermediate Series. There are many practitioners that feel a bit intimidated by the second series. It is truly an elegant, beautiful and graceful arrangement of asanas that is much more accessible than one might think. David is incredibly intuitive, sensitive and expert in presenting the practice with care, clarity and joy! EVERY asana may be modified, amplified or demystified to suit the needs of every individual. Come and see for yourself!

  • A Pleasant Exploration of Gentle Methods To Open the Hips

Tight hips can cause problems in other areas such as the knees and back. David has devised an approach of exploring the hips through slow and gentle movements, stable holding of postures and deep breathing which all combine to bring greater openness to the hips without forcing or pushing. To create stability David will share methods of activating one area in order to relax another. This balanced approach is both safe and effective and can be applied to other regions of the body as well. As always, David will manage to make this enjoyable experience. Bring Those Tight Hips In For a Tune-Up!

  • Life, Love and Living With Purpose

David will share Stories, Anecdotes and Insights gained over his more than 40 years of yoga practice and pursuits of spiritual life, love, health and adventure. David is a witty, humorous and inspiring storyteller. His life is filled with colorful, sometimes wild, sometimes sad, sometimes hilarious and always entertaining pursuits of knowledge of the world around him and the wonders that reside within us all. Within his tales of travel, fasting, chanting, seeking, studying, laughing and crying there is always a thread of sincerity of purpose that anyone seeking greater meaning of life can relate to and possibly even gain tools of insights of their own from the mistakes, successes, failures, triumphs and bumps along the road of life that David shares with honesty and heart-felt sincerity.
